Only five words carry P second and L third, and the whole group is built from a few binary choices.
Two letters open these five, two letters fill the fourth box and two close them. Every entry is one combination of those three short lists.
That makes it the most mechanical page on the site. Work out the opening letter and the fourth, and the last box follows almost automatically.
All three are ordinary English and all three open with S. SPLIT is much the commonest, SPLAT describes a wet flat impact, and SPLAY means to spread outwards.
UPLIT means lit from below, which is standard in lighting and photography. UPLAY means to store or lay something up, and it is archaic.
U opens two of the five. Both entries mirror an S word exactly in the last two boxes, which is what makes the group feel like a grid rather than a list.
Not always, but it is much the commonest word here. If the pattern is confirmed it is the sensible first try.
Lit from below, as with a facade or a stage set. It is standard in lighting design and rare elsewhere.
PL is a consonant cluster that English almost always puts at the start of a word, as in PLAN and PLOT. Only an S or a U will sit in front of it at this length.
Zero of the five do, so a repeated letter never appears on this page.
