One hundred fifty nine words put S first and O third, and thirty seven of them repeat a letter. Two openings take nearly half the page between them.
T takes the second box in thirty nine words, twenty five percent, and H follows on thirty two. Together that is seventy one of the one hundred fifty nine. L, C, N and P sit in the teens behind them.
So the second box does real work here, which is not true of every large pattern. Testing T or H early is worth more than anything you could do at the other end of the word.
STOCK, STONE, STOOD, STOOL and STORE come from the T branch. SHOCK, SHOES, SHORE, SHORT and SHOUT come from H. Between them they cover most of what a puzzle is likely to want.
O takes the fourth box in twenty nine words, eighteen percent, which is where most of the repeats come from. SHOOK, STOOD, STOOL and SCOOP all carry a doubled O.
S closes twenty nine of the one hundred fifty nine and E another twenty five, with T on twenty two. Those three take seventy six of the page.
The doubled O accounts for most of it. With O fixed in the third box, a second O in the fourth is a natural shape and twenty nine words take it.
They differ in a single box, so as a pair they are wasteful. Take one and spend the other turn on a different branch entirely, like SCOPE or SLOPE.
Plenty. L, C, N and P each take between ten and seventeen words, giving SLOPE, SCORE, SNORE and SPORT.
