One hundred thirty five words put S first and E third, and forty five of them repeat a letter. That is a third of the page and it is the first thing to use.
T takes the second box in twenty seven words, twenty percent. H and P tie on twenty each and K follows on fifteen. After those the counts fall away steadily.
E takes the fourth box in twenty nine of the one hundred thirty five, twenty one percent, and most of those carry a doubled E straight after the third box. SHEEP, SHEER, SHEET, SLEEK, SLEEP and SLEET all work this way.
So a repeated letter is not the rare signal it is on most pages. It tells you which family you are in and very little else, which means the fifth box still has to be solved separately.
A takes the fourth box in twenty two words, giving SHEAR, SPEAK, STEAK and STEAL. Those are the words worth reaching for when a repeat has already been ruled out, and they spread across more endings than the doubled group does.
They differ only in the last box, so as a pair they waste a turn. Take one and spend the other on SPEAK or STEAL, which sit in the A branch instead.
Twenty eight, which is twenty one percent, ahead of T on seventeen and L on sixteen.
A slap or a blow. It sits in the K branch alongside SKEIN and SKEWS, and none of those three carries a doubled letter.
