Nine words put I first and D third, and only two letters ever appear in the second box. INDEX is the one word here you would actually use.
N takes the second box in six of the nine and O takes the other three. Nothing else appears there at all, which makes the second box a coin flip rather than a search.
The N branch holds INDEX plus INDEW, INDOL, INDOW, INDRI and INDUE. Only the first of those is a word you would meet.
The O branch is IODIC, IODID and IODIN, all chemistry terms built on iodine. None is a realistic guess unless the puzzle is aimed at chemists.
INDEX is the answer far more often than the count suggests. IODIC, IODID and IODIN are technically valid but you would not produce them, and INDRI, a lemur, is the only other entry with any life to it.
In practice this page is INDEX and a list of things to check afterwards. Playing INDEX first costs nothing and resolves the pattern most of the time.
If it is wrong, the second box decides your next move. An O sends you to the iodine words and an N leaves the remaining obscure entries to work through.
Effectively yes. Everything else is either a chemistry term or a dictionary entry, which makes this an unusually lopsided pattern.
A large lemur. It is the only word here besides INDEX that names something most people could picture.
No, both are accepted variant forms alongside iodide and iodine. Word game dictionaries carry all of them and this list holds the shorter ones.
