One hundred four words put S first and U third, and no second letter takes more than a sixth of them. This is one of the flatter distributions in the family.
C and T tie at sixteen words each, L takes fifteen, A takes eleven and P takes ten. Q and H follow close behind. No branch runs away with the page.
That flatness cuts both ways. A guess in the second box rarely eliminates much, but the surviving list is still varied enough to be worth reading.
Q takes the second box in nine words, which is remarkable for a letter that appears almost nowhere else. SQUAD, SQUAT, SQUIB and SQUID all come from it.
Most players write Q off entirely. On this page that is a mistake, because the SQU branch is nearly as large as the L branch and far more predictable once you are inside it.
S closes twenty eight of the one hundred four, twenty seven percent, well ahead of T on ten. Test the last box early, then work the second, and leave the fourth alone since fifteen different letters appear there.
It is bigger than it looks, at nine of the one hundred four. If you have a U placed in the third box and no other information, SQUAD is a genuinely reasonable opening.
Only seven do. The U in the third box tends to be followed by a consonant cluster rather than a repeat, which keeps doubles rare across the whole page.
SOUND, with STUDY and SAUCE close behind. All three come from different second letters, so guessing across them covers a lot of ground.
