Twenty nine words hold P second and E third, and a doubled letter turns up more often than the size suggests.
Six of the twenty nine carry a doubled letter. SPEED, SPEEL, APEEK and EPEES double the E, while SPELL doubles the L, and for a group this small that is a high proportion.
It is worth testing early. On most pages a repeat is a long shot, and here it is closer to an even bet than you would expect.
S takes twenty of the twenty nine, and every one of those runs SPE. SPEAK, SPEND, SPENT, SPECS, SPEAR and SPERM are the useful entries inside it.
Both are entirely ordinary and neither belongs to the SPE shape. APERY, APERS and APERT sit with them on the A side, and UPEND is the lone U opener.
The fourth box splits evenly, with A, E and R each taking five of the twenty nine and N on four. Nothing dominates, so the letter after the E rarely settles anything.
SPEAK tests the A and K without repeating. SPEED doubles the E, which spends part of the guess on a letter you already hold.
A temple or tomb cut into rock, a term from Egyptology. Nothing else here is anywhere near as obscure.
Open or evident, an archaic form related to aperture. APERY, meaning mimicry, sits beside it and is unrelated.
It is the ordinary verb meaning to turn something on its end. It is the one entry that opens with U and the only common word on the A and U side besides OPERA and OPENS.
