Eighty words carry I second and T third, and one ending accounts for a whole cluster of them.
BITCH, DITCH, FITCH, HITCH, MITCH, PITCH and WITCH all close the same way, and AITCH joins them from a vowel start. H takes the fourth box in eleven of the eighty.
They differ in the first box and nowhere else, so landing on the ITCH shape narrows the word without identifying it. That is the central difficulty of this page.
E takes it in twenty of the eighty, ahead of T on twelve and A on eleven. SITES, CITED, BITES and KITES all run through the E shape.
Twelve of the eighty repeat a letter, mostly a second T. BITTY, DITTY, KITTY, NITTY, BITTS and MITTS all work that way, and they are easy to miss when you are scanning for fresh letters.
B, L, S, T and W each open seven of the eighty, with D, K, M, N and P just behind. Seventeen letters appear there, and none of them is worth betting on.
You cannot, from the pattern alone. Both sit in the ITCH cluster and only the first letter separates them, so you need a guess that tests P or W directly.
It repeats the T, which costs part of the guess. SITES or VITAL cover more fresh ground on a first move.
The name of the letter H written out. It is the only entry in the ITCH cluster that does not start with a consonant.
