Only fourteen words place H second and R third, and two openings produce nearly all of them.
T opens eight of the fourteen and S opens five, leaving just one for anything else. THREE, THROW, SHRUB and SHRED are what those two openings produce.
IHRAM is the exception, the white garment worn by pilgrims on the hajj. One of the fourteen opens with a vowel and this is the one.
Each of them runs THR and then differs across the last two boxes. THREE and THREW share four letters, and THROW and THROE do the same.
So the TH branch is dense and awkward. Getting THR confirmed narrows the group but leaves you choosing among words that look almost identical.
W closes four of the fourteen, more than any other letter, which is unusual for a final position. M and B take two each.
THREE repeats the E and sits in the crowded TH branch. SHRUB tests the other main opening and uses a different letter in every box.
A tiny insect that feeds on plants, usually written thrips even in the singular. Gardeners know it better than word game players do.
To twist or turn, in Scots. It is the same word as throw taken down a different path.
