Thirty words carry E second and V third, and E fills the box after the V more often than not.
E takes the fourth box in seventeen of the thirty, fifty seven percent. LEVEL, NEVER, SEVEN, FEVER and REVEL all run through it.
BEVEL, DEVEL, KEVEL, LEVEL, NEVEL and REVEL form one cluster, while BEVER, FEVER, LEVER, NEVER and SEVER form the other. L closes eight of the thirty and R closes six.
The two clusters differ in a single box, and inside each cluster only the first letter changes. So confirming E, V and E still leaves a wide choice open.
The useful move is the last letter rather than the fourth. Separating L from R cuts the group roughly in half before you think about openers at all.
SEVEN and DEVIL are the two entries sitting outside both clusters, and they are among the likeliest answers a puzzle will want.
It repeats both the L and the E, so it tests only three different letters. NEVER or DEVIL will usually tell you more.
A strong timber or iron fitting on a ship used for securing ropes. It sits in the same cluster as LEVEL and BEVEL.
A revue is a theatrical show, while REVIE means to raise a stake again in an old card game. They differ in the last two boxes.
