This page holds 887 Spanish words beginning with U, the smallest vowel group in the collection.

How the U Words Divide

N takes about thirty three percent of the second position, L eighteen, and S and R fifteen each. T adds another six.

U Rarely Starts a Spanish Word

Behind that small total is a simple fact. U is the least used vowel in Spanish, and it appears far more often inside a word than at the front of one.

Where it does open a word, it is often carrying the UN prefix, which works much as it does in English.

UNIR and UNIDAD come from a different source again, the Latin root for one, which accounts for much of the N branch.

Common U Words for Learners

USTED, UNIDAD, UNIVERSO, URGENTE and UTILIZAR are among the most useful entries, and USTED in particular comes up in every polite conversation.

  • Usted
  • Unidad
  • Universo
  • Urgente
  • Utilizar

U is also the vowel most often silent, though not on this page. In QUE, QUI, GUE and GUI it is written and not pronounced, which is a separate pattern worth knowing.

On this page every U is pronounced, since it carries the syllable rather than following a Q or a G.

That makes these entries easier to read aloud than their spelling might suggest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is USTED formal or informal

Formal. It is the polite way to say you, and it takes the same verb forms as he or she, which catches many learners out early.

When is U silent in Spanish

After Q, and after G before E or I. QUESO and GUERRA both contain a written U that is never said aloud.

Why are there so few U words

U is the least frequent vowel in Spanish and opens very few roots. Most of what is here comes from the UN prefix or from Latin borrowings.
