There are 4,813 Spanish words beginning with B, and a third of them take A as the next letter.

How the B Words Divide

A leads at about thirty four percent, O nineteen, R thirteen, and I and E ten each. U takes the remaining eight.

B and V Sound the Same in Spanish

This is the single most useful thing to know about the page. Spanish makes no audible difference between B and V, so BASTA and VASTA are pronounced identically.

That means you cannot spell a B word from hearing it alone. Learners are taught the spelling of each word rather than a rule, because no rule exists.

Everyday B Words to Learn

BUENO, BONITO, BLANCO, BARCO and BEBER cover five different second letters and are among the first words most courses introduce.

  • Bueno
  • Bonito
  • Blanco
  • Barco
  • Beber

BR and BL account for a useful slice of the page. Both clusters hold together at the start of a syllable, so the vowel always moves to the third position.

Those two are also the only places on this page where B is followed by something other than a vowel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Spanish speakers tell B and V apart

In speech they do not. When spelling aloud they say be larga or be grande for B and ve corta or uve for V to avoid confusion.

Is there any rule for choosing B or V

A few patterns help, such as verbs ending in BIR mostly taking B, but there are exceptions and most words simply have to be learned.

Which B words are worth learning first

BUENO and BIEN appear constantly in ordinary speech, though the second is short enough to fall below the five letter minimum here.
